Today I’ll be talking about the Novex My Curls Movie Star Hair Mask, how I use it and why I love it so much. Please keep in mind that while I am an affiliate of the company, this post is not sponsored.
This is a product from Novex’s “Movie Star” line. I chose the one for curls, and apparently it’s a spin-off of the My Curls Line.
While the original “My Curls” line is moisture-based and protein-free, the Novex My Curls Movie Star line does contain protein, so this is just a heads up if your hair doesn’t respond well to protein.
I find (with my hair at least) that hi-po hair tends to like more protein than someone with low porosity hair.
Although, I have to ask, is there such a thing as a protein-sensitive high porosity natural?
I’ll have to do more research on that, but until then, let’s get into my experience with this hair mask.
Of course, every product makes claims and gives you promise of numerous benefits. I was confident in trying this hair mask after having such great results with the moisture line, but as we all know, natural hair (especially hi-po hair) needs just as much protein as it does moisture because protein is going to help our strands RETAIN moisture.
So, what promises does Novex make with the Movie Star My Curls line? Let’s take a look:
Curly Girl Friendly!
I don’t follow the curly girl (CG) method, but for those of you that don’t use silicones or petrolatum, this is a product you can use with confidence.
I don’t believe they’ve changed their formula, but just be sure to check the ingredients label if you choose to give this product a try because lately I’ve noticed an increase in companies changing their formulas for some reason and sometimes it’s not for the better.
Putting It To The Test
For this wash day, I decided to use this mask as directed. After shampooing with the My Curls Shampoo, I applied this product generously to my hair from the ends of my hair to the roots.
Even though I’m never looking to increase the volume of my hair, I decided to try this product simply because of all the awesome oils it contains. Some of these oils I’ve never tried on my hair and I was curious to see whether it would make a huge difference.
Any product that says it’s for “dry, tangled, frizzy” hair is a must-try in book because these are issues I’d like to avoid with my hair and prevention is always better than a cure.
This is a lighter hair mask, much like it’s moisture-based counterpart, so don’t try to hold the jar upside down without spilling any.
When applying this mask, I instantly noticed the slip this product had and I loved the way it melted my tangles away even while finger detangling prior to going in with my detangling tool.
Now, here’s where things get a little interesting. If you don’t like strong, perfume-like smells, leave this product as far away from yourself as possible.
But, for those of you that love strong, fragrant hair products, I’m almost certain this will be one for your hair stash. It definitely lingers on the hair, so be prepared to get a whiff of your own hair when the wind blows or your hair falls in your face.
I think I experienced one of the fastest detangling sessions of my life! Since using my Sleek Life detangling brush, it doesn’t take me long to detangle in general, but this made the process even faster ( I didn’t even think this was possible! ).
Another thing I noticed was how soft my hair was, which is surprising because this product contains protein. I’m guessing this is a balancing hair mask, especially since it contains so many oils, so I would definitely feel comfortable using this on a weekly basis during the colder months.
I wouldn’t recommend this as a hard protein treatment, so if you’re looking for something stronger, I’d suggest finding another alternative, but it’s definitely something I’d use in between your favorite hard protein treatment for general maintenance.
Worth The Price?
It’s another product they offer in the giant 35oz jar, so it’s definitely worth the price, even if you find you don’t like the product because, once again, Novex offers a lot of product for such a low price.
I find the quality of this hair mask to be exceptional (at least, that’s what my hair says) but I did post the ingredients for you just in case you’re more strict with your product ingredients than I am.
As long as you don’t have a sensitive nose or allergy to the ingredients in this product, I’d say give it a go. If you’re allergic to fragrance, definitely don’t waste your time because there is definitely a LOT of smell that comes from this product (even though I love it) and there’s no way they achieved this level of fragrance without adding more fragrance than normal.
***WARNING: This is the product a few YouTubers claimed made their hair fall out. It’s not on as large of scale as the DevaCurl controversy, but it’s something to be aware of because apparently there’s a possibility that it COULD do the same to you. Try with caution if this is something you’re concerned about happening or if you’ve had this happen with products in the past***
