As a natural with a greasy scalp, I’ve found it really hard to find a shampoo that effectively degreases me without reaching for a sulfate.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my sulfates (well… my scalp does), but I’m very aware of what has been happening to my strands since I increased my washing frequency.
My wallet was just beginning to recover from a previous exploration into the more expensive brands that were marketed for natural hair, so I wasn’t about to go out and spend another $25 for a shampoo just yet.
So… as I mentioned in my previous post, I decided to give a company called Novex a shot and let me tell you:
This Brazilian shampoo BLEW MY MIND!
A Sulfate-Free Shampoo… That LATHERS?!
I won’t start discussing ingredients in this post (you can click here to view the ingredients from the bottle I purchased) but one thing I love is a shampoo that lathers (recovering sulfate junkie over here, remember?) and it’s because not only do I feel like it’s cleaning my scalp, but I’m also able to tell where the shampoo is.
Very useful when rinsing. I don’t have time to re-rinse my hair. I have enough rinsing to do on wash day already.
Smells Amazing, Yet Inexpensive
Weird, but I mean this in the best possible way. It’s not overly perfumy (it’s a soft scent that’s slightly sweet, for those who have a sensitive nose). It was odd for me, but only because it was different. I don’t think I’ve ever smelled a “sweet” shampoo.
Most shampoos I’ve used in the past were either super strong or had a floral scent.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about this at first, but I got used to it really quick, especially when I realized my next point.
It’s The Perfect Balance For My Scalp And Hair
Not only is this shampoo gentle on my strands, it’s also EXCELLENT at cleansing my scalp. I was even able to detangle with this a little (nothing crazy simply because it’s not in my nature to detangle with shampoo).
I was worried it was going to leave my hair feeling stripped once I washed it out, but NO!
This product even clumped my curls oh-so nicely and I could already tell my frizz was minimized.
Great For Shampooing In Twists
I suppose I’d be considered a lazy natural because I don’t wash my hair loose. I ALWAYS wash in twists now, even if I’m planning on doing a wash n’ go because my hair density makes it really hard for me to access my scalp and it takes forever to section in the shower.
Therefore, I choose to section, detangle and apply my pre-poo the night before I plan to wash. I was expecting to have to unravel each twist, wash, then re-twist while in the shower, but I didn’t have to.
While this shampoo is pretty creamy, I found it easy to spread and a little goes a long way.
It Rinses Easily
This is the reason I think this is great for shampooing in twists. Again, I thought I would have to unravel each twist to rinse thoroughly (I squeeze the shampoo through my twists; so much easier and faster) BUT… once again, I was pleasantly surprised!
As you can imagine, I was a little paranoid that I was just getting my hopes up, but nope… After simply letting the water run over my scalp and letting the water soak into my hair, I was able to squeeze the shampoo out and all I had to do was make sure the water was clear.
Not a sud in sight when I was done.
Worth The Price?
Hell yes! I paid $10.99 for a 10.14 oz bottle (affordable compared to other shampoos I’ve purchased), but I think Novex has a lot of sales on their products on their website that may save you some money.
Since I am impatient when waiting for hair products to be delivered (and I have Amazon Prime) I decided to buy from Amazon instead. I’ll definitely be checking out their deals and see what kind of shipping costs are involved the next time I buy this (yeah, I’m definitely gonna be buying this shampoo again).
The Final Verdict
If you’ve been looking for a shampoo for your oily scalp, but don’t want a shampoo that strips your strands, definitely worth a try.
Afterall, you already know you’ve spent a lot more on shampoo in the past that cost more and weren’t worth a cent. Everyone needs shampoo, but nobody needs a shampoo that’s going to ruin your hair over time.
